Lovely Hotel, far nicer inside than the building leads you to believe. Stunning sea view downstairs. Really lovely staff, nothing too much trouble. We had a simple but tasty meal in the evening. Good prices for drinks and food. Bedroom and bathroom great!

The location was great: a very short walk from the train, an easy walk to shops/restaurants/the Thames. With very few exceptions, our room overlooking the main road was quiet at night. The room was clean, nicely appointed, and not too small.

There is an elevator/lift at the Selwyn, but because of the age of the building, there were additional stairs for us to get to our room AFTER taking the elevator. There was no one to help with our luggage, and negotiating these additional stairs was not fun. It was extremely disappointing to completely run out of toilet tissue on our last night. We were already dressed for bed, TWICE used the room's iPad to ask for more, but none ever arrived. This is the reason I did not award 5 stars!

The staff are very welcoming and accommodating, the rooms are nice and comfy, but that’s about all.

A few young members of staff waiting on tables that don’t seem to be trained well, several times they made mistakes or couldn’t understand customers. The food for dinner was not high quality and a long way away from Michelin level. Food portions were way too small, only one scallop for a starter ! The steak was tough, not cooked properly or very poor quality ingredients. The price for dinner was definitely not value for money. Breakfast was again disappointing, cold, the bacon was tough and without taste, probably cheap ingredients again. Who gives the last slice of bread as toast to a customer ? Shameful. Service at dinner and breakfast was very slow with priority given to large groups leaving the couples on tables having to wait a long time for food. The spa services are ok but the massage was not great and not worth the money.
