So glad we went to the pre play talks, and Festival, which give an explanation of the plays, and characters. This was really helpful for seeing Shakespeare plays. The lecturers are enthusiastic and fill in the audience on sayings and underlying motivations of characters, and nuances that might be overlooked. We even got a chance to see an interview of an author, and could ask questions.

    An American Beauty.

An American Beauty. Three venues with Shakespeare and an array of challenging contemporary or classic plays. No wonder a number of those they have commissioned end up in LA and NYC. Production values consistently high and acting as well. The company is on the forefront of dramatic change, through use of deaf performers, in wheelchairs, cross-gender casting, and more. Where else would you find 76 trombones with a black Marian the Librarian? It's the future of theater, which does upset some who attend.

Sorry to say, but I've noticed a decided decline in the quality of the productions over the last few years. Maybe quite a few now. I like a good play that makes you really think; but lately all the plays seems to have such an "agenda" -- HEAVY emphasis on political and social issues in almost EVERYTHING (especially LGBTQ, though maybe that's to be expecgted in theater? But that seems so stereotypical...). It's admirable to know that one can use theater to challenge society's ways and views; there is definitely a time and place for that! But give me some options. SOMEtimes, I just want to be entertained and have a fun evening and a good laugh...without opening a debate.

We've attended plays several times. Though not all productions are equally compelling, the production values, acting, and design are always top-notch. And many days there are free performances in the plaza.
