It would be perfect if more premium sashimi were given at dinner. One night was Aji and another night was Hirame. For the price paid, maybe the ryokan could consider giving more premium sashimi and add on another type instead of only one type.

Total of about 9 to 10 separate units. I stayed in Kumori which has a living room good for 3 to 4 futon beds, a separate bedroom with 2 super single western beds, vanity area and bath and a separate area for toilet. It is like a house. Staff are very friendly. I requested for one dinner to be served in my unit and they kindly agreed and it was a fabulous experience. We were given 50 mins each day to use the private onsen in a separate area, just 1 min walk away. Excellent. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. I will definitely stay there again if I go back to Beppu.

I had thought we'd get served meals in the rooms but it was in a (private) dining room in a different building instead at western style tables. Not a big issue but just different than I'd expected as it wasn't fully clear until we arrived that was the case!

Lovely little traditional ryokan in Beppu. Was very nice having a small lodge to ourselves and the outside onsens were incredible. They were able to cater to my vegetarian requirements so I didn't miss out on the kaiseki experience and had an incredible meal alongside the normal meat/fish meal served. Delightful service and accomodation, one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Appreciated the option for western beds as well as traditional futons in the tatami room as it allowed the people in our group who wanted to try futons to have that experience and for those that preferred a western style bed to have that as well.

It’s a bit dim in the living room.

The ryokan staff were very friendly and helpful. Especially Kawasaki Mimiko san who helped us to figure out how to commute to our next destination. She even printed out the train schedule for us. Breakfast and dinner were also very good.

Renovations were going on in the vicinity of the hotel during our stay, so some areas in the hotel like the family bath and lobby comfort room were off-limits. The noise level was tolerable, though, and our room was detached from the lobby, so no serious issues.

The breakfast was an elegant spread, the same as the dinner. The room was spacious enough for 3 persons, and they arranged the futons for us while we were dining so it wasn't a big issue since we didn't know how to set them up. The hotel staff service was impeccable.

Re the shuttle - although I had asked months before to be picked up via their free shuttle at the appointed time on the day we arrived, I had to call the ryokan after the appointed time to make sure we got picked up. Not sure how this service could be improved.

Both the dinner and the breakfast surpassed expectations. The public bath and the private family bath were also unforgettable experiences. A little difficult to get around from the ryokan, but they do offer a free shuttle from the ryokan to Beppu station and back.

This onsen is situated in a forested area, which is surprisingly convenient. Its location may catch you off guard, as you wouldn't expect to find it nestled amidst the trees. The tranquility of this place is remarkable, with the delightful melodies of birds serenading you as you enjoy your breakfast.

Beppu Showaen carries the Japanese traditions and offers onsen and japanese style rooms. The courtesy of the staff was exceptional.

Love love love the place! Staff are friendly and helpful! Food was exceptionally good, and we managed to get a slot for private hot spring which was perfect! Would definitely go back again!

There were no explanations in English, so I had the impression to miss out on some of the possibilities there were. We came with our kids who were not too keen on some of the dishes that were part of the dinner and the breakfast. It was a pity that some of the food was wasted. We tried to eat what they didn’t like but couldn’t eat all.

It’s nice ryokan, with a private bath one can reserve and a general bath for everyone to use. We liked the friendly and helpful staff and the house we stayed in. It was our first experience at a ryokan.
