Situated in Kyoto, 800 metres from Heian Shrine, 明和荘Mei Wa Inn features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and express check-in and check-out. With inner courtyard views, this accommodation offers a patio. The ryokan has family rooms. Great location away from the crowds but a very short distance away from pretty much all the hot spots. It’s generally pretty rare to find a place with this much space in a major city in Japan for what is honestly a steal of a price. The host went far and beyond what I expected and honestly did a better job helping our group plan activities and restaurants than many hotel concierges I have dealt with.

At the ryokan, every unit is fitted with bed linen and towels. Auberge AZABU is a family-run "hotel" near the Gojo Tube Station. The whole family is lovely and they will take good care of you. The location is convenient as it's just 2 min from Gojo Station (tube) and in 5 minutes you are at Kyoto Station. The hotel is very nice, architecture and furniture take probably inspiration from the traditional ryokans so you will have the feeling to sleep in a traditional Japanese house even if modernised. We slept on the futon bed and it was soooo comfortable (first time for me sleeping on a futon bed). We had the breakfast included and it was what we needed to start the day. I liked Kyoto and the place so much that I decided to stay an extra night so this is indicative of how comfortable it's been

Amazing experience - Ryokan stay. Proper futon plus tatami sleeping in a large room, especially large when you put aside the tatamis. Makes you wonder why on earth we need the huge useless beds that occupy 60% of a room and make it useless during the day. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff.
I like the feel of the property. It was exactly what I was looking for on that part with the tatami floors and the futon. It was a lovely surprise to use the yukata
The location was very convenient. The Ryokan itself well equipped ,very nice and traditional. The staff extremely nice, helpful and polite. The breakfast was incredible. I especially liked sleeping on the futons and wearing a yukata as part of the experience.
This was one of the greatest Japanese experiences I have ever had. The staff went above and beyond, making us feel like family. The food was incredible and authentic. I tried foods I had never had before and was so impressed. The ryokan experience is something EVERYONE should experience and to be so lucky to experience the Ohanabo ryokan, onsen, dinner and breakfast, yukata dress wear, and the generosity and kindness of the staff. Truly an unforgettable experience.
Rooms were large and great for people travelling in big groups / with kids. If you choose the Japanese tatami style rooms, you can sleep on futons on the ground too (if you stay at a traditional ryokan they will set it up it for you, they don't here). At several timings, they have free beer and sake, tea and coffee and even calligraphy activities at the front desk area. The staff there were really friendly and helped us with making dinner reservations at several restaurants for our group of 9.
The hosts were extremely gracious, and I love that it’s family-owned, in the building they live in! There is lovely tatami in the rooms and pretty comfy futons, with beautiful, minimalist decoration. Yukata and tea were provided for a full, relaxing ryokan stay.
Lovely stay in traditional Ryokan with futon beds. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Nice option to use onsen and try bath robes. Breakfast is well made and presented by staff.
An authentic ryokan, in a building that's probably well over 100 years old. The rooms have tatami mats and futons and the onsen is beautiful. It's like staying in someone's home! This is not a super-swish modern hotel, so if that's what you want go elsewhere, but if you want a place with real character, staffed by people who treat you as long-lost friends, then this is the place for you. We will certainly return next time we're in Kyoto.
This Ryokan is located near several bus stops, perfect to sightsee Kyoto. The JR station is 10 min bus far away. The staff was very kind and warm as a real example of Japanese hospitality. This stay offers also several services like bike rental and onsen free tickets. The location was very relaxfull and quiet. Our room was equipped with tatami floor and futon beds. The room has several amenties, shower and bath tub. It has been a real japanese experience. We loved it!
traditional tatami room with futon, welcome tea with sweets, Japanese Yukata, small Japanese courtyard, free onsen, happy-hour tea and snacks, and friendly staffs
